Năm 1948, linh mục Lê Văn Lý (sau này là GS Ngôn ngữ và Viện trưởng Viện Đại Học Đà Lạt trước năm 1975) đã trình luận án tiến sĩ văn chương “Le parler vietnamien : sa structure phonologique et morphologique fonctionnelle” ở ĐH Paris. Nghe nói luận án được chấm hạng ưu vì cha đã trình bày sự diễn đạt phong phú của tiếng Việt.
Theo cha Lý, cấu trúc câu và cách sắp xếp từ ngữ trong tiếng Việt theo một trật tự nhất định. Khi hoán chuyển vị trí các từ ngữ trong câu, ý nghĩa sẽ thay đổi.
Sau đây là ví dụ cha đưa ra (có thêm dấu ngắt câu, chú thích tiếng Pháp, tiếng Anh cho rõ nghĩa)

He comes, but does not say why
