Tech startup Hidrate Inc. is seeking $35,000 to launch a "smart" water bottle and accompanying app that tracks how much users drink. The company launched its Kickstarter campaign Monday and had raised $13,898 as of that afternoon.
At the time, Nguyen was starting to exercise more often and eat healthier, but still felt sluggish. Friends advised her to drink more water, inspiring her to create a water bottle that encouraged people stay hydrated.
Nguyen said she pulled together a "Frankenstein prototype" of the product at Startup Weekend using a basic Nalgene water bottle, microboard and a hair tie.
The resulting product, now called HidrateMe, is a 24-ounce water bottle featuring a sensor stick that tracks how much a user drinks. The stick collects and sends data to a smartphone app. When it's time for a user to drink more, the water bottle glows.
HidrateMe largely bases its hydration guidelines on simple inputs such as height, age and weight. However, it can account for data it collects from wearable fitness trackers like Fitbit devices. In addition, it monitors your location, and will advise you to drink more water if you’re somewhere really hot or humid, Nguyen said.
